University Island - 01 MASTERPLAN (ENG)

Poveglia, as a prominet element of the Venetian Lagoon, is revitalized and transformed into a dream University Campus, located in acontext of great value. The island recovery is the project aim, the island gives theopportunity to create a modern space that will be an artistic and cultural university campus for residents, and a new center of attraction, both for tourists and inhabitants. The island will be the green extension of the city, where there will be located some of its most significant cultural events. The campus integrates this articulated cultural offer, offering vast spaces designed to host conferences, exhibitions and cultural events, both inside the historic buildings and in outdoor spaces.
The delicate ecosystem has to be restorated as well, by the use of compatible materials and a natural system integrated to the environment. The design of the whole space shows what for years has characterized the island: its agricultural vocation, that is made by regular shapes, which make memories of the fields. The aim is to integrate and manage the island biodiversity.
Considering the island architecture and landscape quality, the idea is to save most of the historical buildings, enhancing them through the creation of a square all around, like a frame, made to underline the historical buildings importance. At the same time they are completly integrated into the new system, rehabilitated and with new functions. New autonumous architectures and volumes are integrated in this space. According to an organic design, based on a modular repetition, the new buildings respect the island nature and history. The materials are just concrete, wood and glass, and as all other elements, are characterized by a low visual and territorial impact.

TERRITORIAL SYSTEM

Poveglia University Campus is located in a context of great value, it is necessary to emphatize it by the total revitalization of the island, which, once recovered, is going to integrate the existing system.
The recovery of the island gives the opportunity to create a modern space that, first of all, will be an artistic and cultural university campus for residents, and as well, a new center of attraction, both for international tourists and for the Venice inhabitants. Those people, through simple connections, can reach the island, which is an extension of the city itself, characterized by large surfaces and an high level of naturality.

GREEN SYSTEM

The whole Venetian Lagoon is characterized by a large anthropic action that shaped the forms over time, the result is a unique and unmistakable natural system. The aim is to recover this delicate ecosystem, by the use of compatible materials and a vegetation system, integrated to the environment. The design shows again what for years has characterized the island, its agricultural vocation, this is possible through regular shapes, which recall the fields, using only native and naturalized species. The aim is to integrate and manage the island biodiversity.

CULTURAL SYSTEM

Poveglia is going to be an additional area for Venice where there will be located some of its most significant cultural events, strengthening the primacy of more glam city in the contemporary cultural context. The campus integrates this articulated cultural offer, offering vast spaces designed to host conferences, exhibitions and cultural events, both inside the historic buildings and in outdoor spaces.

ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEM

Considering the island architecture and landscape quality, the idea is to save most of the historical buildings, enhancing them through the creation of a square all around, the square is like a frame, made to underline the historical buildings importance. At the same time they are completly integrated into the new system, rhabilitated and with new functions. New autonumous architectures and volumes are integrated in this space. According to an organic design, based on a modular repetition, the new buildings respect the island nature and history. The materials are just concrete, wood and glass, and as all other elements, are characterized by a low visual and territorial impact.
